The Hospital Loan Cupboard
Purpose:
- The Loan Cupboard provides residents of the Sunshine Coast with hospital type equipment for short term loan, free of charge.
- The short term loan of medical equipment often facilitates early discharge from hospital, may prevent unnecessary hospitalization by assisting patients to remain in their home and helps keep community patients safe and independent in their homes.
- It also enables people to “test drive” equipment before making a purchase.

To order equipment:
- Phone the Loan Cupboard at 604-885-2224, extension 4204.
- If no answer, please leave a message stating name and phone number.
- List the items to be borrowed.
- A volunteer will return the call by the next business day.
- An appointment will be made for pick-up in front of the entrance to the South Wing of the hospital.
- The volunteer will give directions on how to get to the pick-up area.
- Be there on time, volunteer will not be able to wait for more than a few minutes.
- If the appointment is missed the client will need to phone and rebook.
To return used equipment:
- Take the items to the designated Loan Cupboard Pick Up/Drop Off area, located in front of the entrance to the South Wing of the hospital.
- Leave the equipment at the entrance way by the sign indicating Loan Cupboard Drop Off.
- Do not drop Loan Cupboard items to any other locations.
To make a donation:
- Please take equipment donations to the designated Pick Up/Drop Off area, located in front of the entrance to the South Wing of the hospital
- This service is made possible by the Sunshine Coast Healthcare Auxiliary.
- Please take monetary donations to the Hospital Administration Office, located on the main floor adjacent to the Cashier. Cheques can be mailed to the Loan Cupboard at PO Box 917, Sechelt B.C. V0N3A0. Donations can also be made online at” and then please provide a link to donations.

Staffing:
- The Loan Cupboard is staffed by trained volunteers.
Duties include:
- loaning equipment with includes arranging the loan, recording all pertinent information and thoroughly cleaning all returned equipment.
- repair/maintenance where volunteers ensure that the equipment is safe and in good condition.
History:
- The Loan Cupboard was started in 1963 with 6 pieces of equipment. Today there are more than 750 items on the inventory.
Loan “Contract”:
- While the equipment is loaned for free, there are some expectations:
- The loan is short term – 2 months (An extension of 2 months may be issued on request)
- The equipment will be returned in good condition and in a timely manner.
- The borrower is responsible for picking up and returning the equipment to the designated Pick Up/Drop Off area in front of the entrance to the South Wing of the hospital.
- The borrower will notify the Loan Cupboard of change of phone number and/or address.
