Telephone Tree Program
The Telephone Tree is a community-based program, run by volunteers and one part-time staff person. This program resides under the umbrella of the Home and Community Care in Sechelt. The purpose of the program is to provide daily telephone calls for social contact and safety reassurance to homebound and isolated seniors. Currently, the Volunteer Coordinator works with seven regular volunteer callers and several spare volunteer callers, to provide daily calls to clients. (The number of clients varies, but 20 is the maximum number of clients that the current structure can manage.)
These clients have accessed, or have been referred to, the program for various reasons. Most clients have some deteriorating health condition and live alone, and often are homebound. Therefore, desires for social contact as well as a daily safety check are the primary reasons for registering with this program. The clients have all expressed their satisfaction with the service and its value to their wellbeing and sense of personal security and comfort.
The volunteer callers, many of them seniors themselves, have also benefited from their participation in the program. They have all expressed a high satisfaction with their role in providing service to those who need it and enjoy the social contact with the clients.
