The demand for extended care is on the rise, especially as more seniors move to the Coast. With a significant portion of our population aged 65 to 69 the need will continue to grow… the grey wave of new retirees has turned into a silver tsunami.
Our healthcare system is feeling the effects, and our extended care facilities are no exception. The invaluable support that Auxiliary members provide not only enhances the care residents receive but also helps ease the workload for staff. We can assist in bringing residents to events and encourage them to enjoy the refreshments.
When residents see us in our blue and white uniforms, they light up with recognition, engaging in a smile or conversation that goes beyond typical health discussions, bringing joy and connection into their lives.
For years, the SC Healthcare Auxiliary volunteers have dedicated themselves to uplifting the community in extended care. From volunteering on the hospital’s second floor to our involvement at the now-closed Shorncliffe and Totem Lodge, and most recently at VCH funded Silverstone Care Centre, our goal has been clear: to enrich the daily lives of those in residence. The care and comfort service we provide creates a positive atmosphere that enhances celebrations and events, making them more enjoyable for everyone involved.
This commitment is rewarding for residents, Auxiliary members, and staff alike.
One recent highlight was our delightful pop-up thrift shop. Volunteers curated a selection of items for residents, featuring hats, scarves, slippers, clothing, jewelry, and books. Many residents joined in the fun, finding something unique that brought them joy. Our familiar faces sparked smiles and conversations, turning a simple shopping trip into a heartwarming event. Both residents and staff consistently express their heartfelt appreciation for the time our volunteers dedicate to visiting and serving, making each day a little brighter and every event a cherished occasion.
